Pro-Stain is a 3-part water-based system for existing unsealed concrete. Instead of forming a film on top, it penetrates and stays part of the surface, which is why it holds up on driveways and patios where roll-on coatings fail.

Two common jobs: bringing a faded or stained slab back to a usable color, and blending a new pour so it matches the older concrete next to it.

Coverage

600 to 800 square feet per coat. Your actual number depends on the base color of the concrete. Plan on 2 coats for most jobs.

What’s in a kit

A complete kit is two 32 fl oz base bottles plus one 3 lb jar of Pro-Stain Pigment. You pick and buy the pigment color separately from the base.

Mixing runs about 1 to 1½ gallons of added water total. Pot life is 6 to 8 hours, shorter in heat.

Surface prep

This is where stain jobs get won or lost. The slab has to be clean and porous before you start.

On existing concrete, strip everything: coatings, paint, oil, release, loose material. Hard-troweled dense surfaces need etching or grinding first. If you etch with an acid product, neutralize the slab before staining.

New concrete needs 30 days of cure in warm weather, longer if it’s cold. Wash off the surface alkalis and efflorescence even when you can’t see them. Leave them and they reactivate every time the slab gets wet, and the stain fails early.

Don’t stain over hydrostatic pressure or active moisture. Surface temp should be 50°F and rising, up to 90°F and cooling.

Application and cure

Apply with a Pro-Stain broom in circular and figure-eight passes, spreading until it stops puddling. Keep a wet edge and re-broom as it dries, or the color dries uneven. Tape doesn’t work here, the stain bleeds underneath it.

Second coat goes on 1 hour after the first is dry to the touch. Walk on it in 3 to 6 hours, drive on it after 48. Keep water off for 24 hours. Seal with Dura Eco-Seal for the longest service life.

One thing crews forget: new and high-performance tires carry extra solvent in the rubber and can mark fresh stain. Park on cardboard for the first few weeks.

Don’t let it freeze. Store above freezing through the whole shelf life.
